Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the specific requirements I need to meet in order to use the TomTom app?

In order to get the TomTom app for iPhone you need:

  • An iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch running OS 3.0
  • iTunes installed on your computer
  • Only during installation of the app you will temporarily need at least double the app file size in free storage space

Please note: users with an orginal iPhone or iPod touch need the TomTom car kit with its built-in GPS receiver in order for the app to work.

2. How do I get the TomTom app for iPhone?

All applications for iPhone can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store and purchased via your iTunes account. In the iTunes App Store you will be able to find and purchase the TomTom app with the map region you are interested in. If you do not have an Apple iTunes account yet, please go to www.apple.com for more information.

3. How do I adjust the volume of the voice instructions within the application?

The easiest way to adjust the volume is to tap the navigation toolbar (the blue bar in the bottom of the navigation screen - showing the route data). When doing this, a volume slider pops up which allows you to easily adjust the volume of the navigation instructions. The last voice instruction will be repeated to confirm that you have set the volume to the right level.

Please ensure that the ring/silent button on the side of your iPhone is not set to ‘silent’.

The side keys of your device will also adjust the volume level of the voice instructions within the TomTom app, but only when a voice instruction is playing.

4. Do I need to buy a map separately after buying the app?

No, the TomTom app comes with the map of your choosing.

5. How much storage space does the TomTom app require?

The required storage space differs per app due to the differences in the maps. You can find the exact file size of each app in the App Store. Only during installation of the app you will temporarily need at least double the app file size in free storage space. After the app has been installed, this temporary extra storage space needed for the installation can be used again for other purposes.

9. What is the benefit of IQ Routes™?

TomTom IQ Routes puts the driving experience of millions of TomTom users into your maps. IQ Routes calculates the fastest route possible using actual average speeds of travel on your route rather than only posted speed limits. With TomTom IQ Routes you’ll always drive the smartest, most efficient route. IQ Routes saves you time, fuel and money.

Traffic isn’t the same during Monday morning rush hour as it is on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Heavy traffic, rotaries, traffic lights, and even pedestrians or shopping crowds can slow you down. The route you’re looking for changes depending on the day and time, so the shortest route isn’t necessarily going to be the fastest. With TomTom IQ Routes you’ll always drive the fastest route.

10. How accurate is the map that comes with my app?

Currently the app comes bundled with TomTom v8.35 maps. TomTom releases new maps four times a year, so whenever you purchase the app you will have the most up-to-date map.

11. How do I expand the map in my app?

You can simply expand your coverage by buying an additional app.

12. Will the map updates be free or do I need to pay for them?

Currently, installing a new map is not necessary, as the TomTom app for iPhone features the latest Tele Atlas map. It’s TomTom’s policy to always make the latest maps available to its users, in both an easy and affordable way. When new maps become available, TomTom will inform its users how to upgrade their map.

13. Do I need the car kit for the app to work?

iPhone original and iPod touch users need the TomTom car kit with its built-in GPS receiver in order for the app to work. iPhone 3G and 3GS do not need the car kit as these models have GPS technology embedded. The car kit does provide several compelling features to maximize the experience of using your iPhone 3G or 3GS in the car. The car kit enhances the GPS performance which will be especially useful in areas where GPS reception is limited, i.e. when driving through a city with high buildings or through forests. You can also benefit from the other great functionalities offered by the car kit to make driving and navigating enjoyable and safe.

Questions about the car kit

1. Does the TomTom car kit come with the TomTom app?

No, the TomTom car kit for iPhone or iPod touch does not come with the TomTom app. You need to buy them separately: the app via the iTunes App Store and the car kit via the TomTom online store at www.tomtom.com.

2. Why is there a dedicated speaker and volume control on the car kit?

To enhance the sound from the iPhone or iPod touch, hence to have better audible turn-by-turn navigation instructions, hands free audio (iPhone only) and music. The volume button allows for easy volume adjustment of your turn-by-turn navigation instructions, phone calls (iPhone only) and music. This is conveniently placed on the side of the mount and is particularly helpful as the volume control on the iPhone or iPod touch itself is inaccessible when mounted.

3. Why do I need the TomTom car kit for iPhone for hands-free calling when my iPhone already offers that function?

Safety first.  With the TomTom car kit, your iPhone will be securely docked and within reach. And thanks to the built-in speaker and microphone, the audio will be much louder and clearer on both sides of the call.

4. What happens when the TomTom app is working and I receive a phone call?

When you have your iPhone docked in the TomTom car kit, you can choose to accept or reject a call with a simple tap. And when you end your call, the TomTom app will automatically restart so you can continue navigating to your destination.

5. How can I connect my car kit to my car stereo?

If your car has an audio in connector, you can easily connect the TomTom car kit to your car stereo with the audio out connecter and a standard 3.5mm audio cable. (Sold separately.)

6. What will be played over my car stereo when the car kit is connected to the stereo?

The turn-by-turn navigation instructions and your music will be played over the car stereo. Phone calls do not route through your car stereo; instead they will be heard through the car kit speaker.  When the 3.5mm audio cable is not connected, all audio will be played over the car kit speaker.

7. What happens when I get a call while I am playing music?

The music will fade out so you can accept your call and will fade back in when you have finished your call.

8. Can I use the TomTom car kit without the TomTom app?

Yes. The car kit works as a secure mount for your iPhone or iPod touch and can be used for handsfree calling (iPhone only) and music playback over your car stereo.

9. Can I use my TomTom car kit without the charger cable?

Yes, but without the cable the car kit serves only as a secure mount. The built-in GPS receiver, speaker, microphone and audio out only work when the cable is plugged in.

10. Why does the car kit rotate 360 degrees and slide in 3 positions?

So you can use it in portrait or landscape mode and you can choose between dashboard and windshield mounting.

11. Why does the car kit have an integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) when my iPhone 3G or 3GS already has GPS?

TomTom wants to offer the best in-car navigation experience for the iPhone. By putting a Global Positioning System (GPS) in the car kit, there is a major improvement in GPS reception, leading to more accurate and timely navigation instructions. This gives you simply the best possible navigation on the iPhone 3G or 3GS.
